SUBANG JAYA: Netizens have raised concern over the shrinking women’s clothing sizes in the market, which have caused body dysmorphia among young girls as they find clothing sizes getting larger.
A viral video posted by TikTok user Dr.Candise @candiselin86 shared how clothing stores in China are selling women’s clothing in outrageously small sizes akin to children’s clothing.
User @Iluvmaru_ shared her experience of how her loved one perceived her even though she adhered to the beauty standard.
“I’ve been living in Shanghai & get admired all the time for my small waist & when I came home, my family was horrified at how much weight I’ve lost,” she commented.
“The part that gets me is the sizing doesn’t even reflect EA (East Asian) female bodies, it’s like they want them to have EDs (eating disorders) and body issues,” user @iamegoism1 commented.
User @clarkedkent commented, “I wonder if the brands do this on purpose similar to the “pretty woman effect” making customers think they’re not good enough makes them want it more.”
The phenomenon of shrinking clothing sizes doesn’t occur only in China, but in other countries too as netizens share their personal shopping experiences.
“I buy clothes in Zara of size XS but when I was shopping at a boutique in South Korea I am medium,” user @bbgum8 said.
User @haven_I from Peru said, “This is also happening in my country. I use jeans in size 32, but in some brands I even need a 36 or 38. That’s crazy.”
On the other hand, user @imaginary.ellee said she likes clothing stores with small sizes but feels unfair for others who don’t share the skinny body type.
“I like these kinds of stores because I am a small person (4’8 & 41kg) but it’s sad seeing people whose bodies naturally not stick thin,” they commented.
